Architectural Membranes

An architectural membrane, also called a tensile membrane, is a coated textile stretched in tension to form the structural skin of a canopy or building. Unlike open shade mesh, it's sealed and waterproof: it carries real load, blocks sun and rain, and spans distances rigid materials can't. USA SHADE designs, engineers, fabricates, and installs every tensile membrane system end to end.

Three Ways to Build a Membrane

Membrane

Sealed, waterproof fabric — provides full rain exclusion for permanent architectural structures.

Every membrane here is coated and waterproof, a canopy that keeps the space below dry rather than open shade cloth. They differ in lifespan, light transmission, and cost. The right one depends on climate, span, building code, and how permanent the structure needs to be.

PTFE

Teflon® Coated Fiberglass

The gold standard for permanent, landmark tensile structures. PTFE membranes offer a 30+ year lifespan, self-cleaning surfaces, and superior fire resistance — ideal for stadiums, transit canopies, and high-profile civic projects.

PVC

Vinyl-Coated Polyester

The versatile, value-driven choice for a wide range of commercial and architectural applications. PVC membranes deliver excellent weatherproofing, bold color options, and strong cost-to-performance ratios.

HDPE Waterproof Membrane

High-Density Polyethylene

A durable, waterproof solution well-suited to dry-climate installations where full water exclusion is required at a competitive price point.

Why Specify a Membrane

Built to Shelter, Not Just Shade

Waterproof & Weather Protection

The defining benefit over shade mesh: a sealed membrane keeps rain, snow, and sun off the space below, so it stays dry and usable year-round.

Built to Last as Long as You Need

Specify the design life the project calls for: PVC for long-term commercial cover, PTFE for permanent landmark architecture.

Aesthetic

Free-form, sculptural shapes rigid materials can't match, in standard or custom colors. The membrane becomes the architecture, not just cover over it.

Translucency & Daylight

Translucency is a feature you can specify. A translucent skin transmits soft, diffused daylight and glows at night; opaque gives full shade.

Large Spans

Tensioned membrane covers wide clear spans with minimal structure, opening up usable space and freeing the design from interior supports.

Ready to Design Your Membrane Structure?

Our architectural team works alongside your engineers and architects from concept through installation — delivering tensile structures that perform for decades.

Start Your Project
How It Works

From First Call to Final Tension

One team stays with you from the first sketch to the day the membrane is tensioned. The people who spec the structure are the people who install it.

1

Consultation

We learn your project goals, site conditions, budget, and timeline — then recommend the right membrane system and structural approach.

2

Design & Form-Finding

Our engineers develop tensile geometry, analyze wind and snow loads, and produce construction drawings in coordination with your project team.

3

Permit & Fabricate

We manage permitting documentation and precision-cut membrane panels in our fabrication facility for a controlled, quality build.

4

Install & Tension

Our field crews install structural steel, attach membrane panels, and tension to engineered specification — delivering the final structure.

Customization

Color & Finish Options

Architectural membranes are available in a wide range of colors and translucency levels. Our team can help you select the right finish for your project's aesthetic and performance requirements.
