Case Studies: Successful Integrations of Shade in Healthcare Environments

Home | Blog, Case Studies | Case Studies: Successful Integrations of Shade in Healthcare Environments

In healthcare facilities, a comfortable environment is essential for patients to feel relaxed and for health professionals to work efficiently. One unique, effective way to increase overall comfort levels is by implementing shade structures. While shade solutions can provide many immediate benefits like sun and rain coverage, they can also have lasting impacts on people who use them, creating a memorable patient and visitor experience.

USA SHADE provides industry-leading shade solutions for organizations across different industries, including healthcare. Over the years, we’ve assisted numerous healthcare facilities and hospitals by providing protective, custom shade structures for their properties. Learn more about how our shade structures have benefitted hospitals and treatment centers by exploring the case studies below.

Methodist Hospital for Surgery

The Methodist Hospital for Surgery is a leading healthcare facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Each day, the hospital works with numerous patients to provide surgical treatments relating to the neuro-spine, ortho-spine, general orthopedics, ENT and podiatry.

The Challenge

Like most healthcare facilities, the Methodist Hospital for Surgery offers a large parking lot for staff, patients and visitors. However, the lot was originally uncovered, creating a poor experience as people and cars were exposed to the hot Texas sun.

Extended sun exposure causes long-term damage to a vehicle’s exterior and interior. In addition, the temperature within a car can reach 123 degrees Fahrenheit, even if it’s just 80 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Further, excess heat and UV exposure can negatively affect people of all ages.

Our Solution

By partnering with the USA SHADE team, the Methodist Hospital for Surgery was able to identify a solution — a full arch cantilever shade canopy. This hospital shade structure incorporates a high-density polyethylene mesh, which effectively blocks up to 97% of the sun’s UV-A and UV-B rays. In addition, the structure offers maximum parking space as it has no columns or posts.

By implementing our shade solution, the hospital was able to enhance the overall comfort of patients, visitors and staff and keep parked vehicles protected from the elements. As a bonus, the modern structure contributes to the facility’s design without being visually distracting.

Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center

Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center (PBRC) is a nonprofit organization specializing in speech, physical and occupational therapy as well as hearing and audiology services. Over the last seven decades, their skilled team has helped adults and children develop or regain vital skills for life.

The Challenge

Common reasons for patients to undergo rehabilitation include accidents, diseases and disabilities. These circumstances can have a significant impact on mental health. The PBRC team wanted to find a way for patients to experience some enjoyment between sessions, so they chose to develop an onsite playground.

As PBRC is located in Texas — the fourth hottest state in the United States — they needed to implement adequate shade to ensure the playground is usable year-round.

Our Solution

PBRC management connected with KDC Associates to create a colorful and fun shade solution for their playground — and to bring the vision to life, KDC Associates partnered with USA Shade for customizable shade structures.

This one-of-a-kind shade solution incorporates the 4-Point Hypar Sail, resembling a kaleidoscope of color. The result is a delightful, protected playground that has gained national recognition for its play therapy value.

Women’s Health Specialists of Yuma

The Women’s Health Center at Yuma Regional Medical Center, located in Yuma, Arizona, is dedicated to giving women premier care through each stage of life.

The Challenge

Like many other organizations with parking lots, Yuma Regional Medical Center’s parking lot lacked natural shade. As a result, patients would return to an uncomfortably warm vehicle after an appointment, and staff working long shifts faced a similar problem.

This healthcare group wanted to create a more comfortable experience for their patients and staff, and USA SHADE was able to help.

Our Solution

Women’s Health Specialists of Yuma contacted USA SHADE to create a custom shade structure for their uniquely shaped car parks. After analyzing the sites, our engineering experts suggested a T-Arch cantilever structure. This product features a curved canopy, offering the following benefits:

  • Superior protection from the elements, especially in windy conditions.
  • Quick installation and customizable to lower heights.
  • Low maintenance, which translates to time- and cost-savings.

While T-Arch cantilever structures are available in various fabric colors, Women’s Health Specialists of Yuma opted for a classic white to complement the building’s exterior.

Edwards Lifesciences

Based in Irvine, California, Edwards Lifesciences helps patients seek innovative treatment for cardiovascular diseases, enabling them to live healthier lives.

The Challenge

The management team at Edwards Lifesciences wanted to create spaces for patients and staff to relax between clinical trials and pathways that made it easier to access each building on the premises. The goal was to create a shaded picnic area, outdoor seating and routes to get to different offices. However, as most paved areas were far from natural shade structures like trees, they needed a shade solution, and they turned to USA SHADE for custom solutions.

Our Solution

When Edwards Lifesciences approached USA SHADE, we suggested a combination of 3-Point Sails and custom cantilevers to give the center its desired level of shade.

USA SHADE 3-Point Sails are ideal for covering seating areas, allowing patients and staff to enjoy the many health benefits of being outdoors, and customizable cantilevers are the preferred choice for long pathways. Edwards Lifesciences chose to further customize their shade structures with bright yellow fabric, which helps brighten up the exterior and evokes feelings of happiness.

Once the tailored structures were ready to be installed, our team placed them alongside the pathways and seating areas, allowing visitors and patients to enjoy the shade as they relaxed outside or navigated between buildings.
